Objective

Initiate a public discussion about how Australia’s governments, infrastructure and energy sectors can accelerate the nation’s energy transition.

Approach

This collaborative effort between CIMIC, AFR Insights and The Action Exchange involved extensive knowledge mobilisation to surface insights designed to address the complexities of the energy sector. The whitepaper, Energising Change: Accelerating Australia’s energy transition infrastructure was published and promoted across the country.

The ideas

Australia’s transition to a clean energy future is accelerating and delivering the infrastructure to support it requires collaboration, innovation and scale. This can be done by:

  • Adopting a simplified ‘one-stop shop’ for permitting, rather than overlapping state and federal processes.

  • Streamlining permitting for projects of state and national significance.

  • Implementing a coordinated approach to develop complex infrastructure projects.

  • Adopting initiatives to share financial risk between government and the private sector.

  • Developing deeper supply chain relationships that incorporate the early procurement of critical equipment.

  • Ensuring equitable sharing of benefits with communities, local partnership models and benefit-sharing frameworks.

  • Encouraging early collaboration between government, investors and developers to reduce cost and timeline uncertainty around complex projects.
